Clock Repair & Restoration
Specialist repair, servicing and restoration of mechanical clocks in our Twyford workshop.
From routine servicing to extensive restoration, every clock is individually assessed before work is agreed.

Mechanical Clock Repairs
We repair all types of mechanical spring- and weight-driven clocks. All work is undertaken in our well-equipped workshop in Twyford, near Winchester.
We also work closely with specialist craftspeople, including dial and furniture restorers, allowing us to coordinate the different skills required for more extensive restorations.
Repairing the Cause, Not Just the Symptom
Clocks require regular and thorough mechanical overhauls. Older clocks in particular often carry evidence of previous attempts to patch faults rather than correct the underlying cause.
Our approach is to identify and correct those underlying problems while taking a sympathetic approach to conservation. Original components are retained wherever they can be reliably saved.
Where a component genuinely needs replacing, the replacement is made to function correctly while blending appropriately with the original mechanism.
What Happens to Your Clock?
A proper mechanical overhaul involves considerably more than simply cleaning the movement and adding fresh oil.
Assessment
The movement is examined for wear, damage and evidence of previous repair before the required work is confirmed.
Dismantling & Cleaning
The mechanism is dismantled so that individual components can be properly inspected and cleaned.
Mechanical Repair
Worn or damaged components are corrected, repaired or, where necessary, sympathetically replaced.
Reassembly & Testing
The clock is reassembled, correctly lubricated and tested before it returns home.
Thorough Mechanical Work
Proper servicing allows us to address wear throughout the mechanism rather than concentrating only on the fault that caused the clock to stop.
- Mechanisms are carefully cleaned to remove contamination, corrosion and inappropriate previous repair material.
- Pivots are polished and damaged or distorted teeth corrected where required.
- Wear can be repaired using appropriate traditional techniques and, where suitable, modern microwelding technology.
- Ultrasonic equipment and specialist horological cleaning solutions are used as appropriate.
- Original material is retained wherever it can continue to perform reliably.
Aesthetic Restoration Is Optional
Mechanical reliability is our priority. Cosmetic restoration is separate and optional, giving you control over how far the restoration goes and helping to keep costs appropriate to the clock and to you.
Where required, hands can be repaired and returned to their original heat-blued or polished brass appearance. Dials can be restored, replated or wax-filled, enamel and painted dials can be repaired, glass can be custom made, and wooden or brass cases can be restored.
A Note About Older Clocks
We aim for the highest standard of mechanical work while recognising the limitations of working with steel and brass that may already have spent two centuries or more in service.
Restoration therefore means balancing mechanical reliability with appropriate conservation. The aim is not to make an old mechanism look new, but to preserve as much original material as practical while returning the clock to reliable operation.
Tell Us About Your Clock
Send us some photographs and a brief description of your clock and the problem you’re experiencing. We can then give you an initial estimate, which can be confirmed once the clock has been examined in the workshop.
